Nigeria Visa for Dual Citizens (2026): Do You Actually Need One?

Do dual citizens need a Nigeria visa? (2026)

If you are a dual citizen — for example British-Nigerian, American-Nigerian or Canadian-Nigerian — the short answer is usually no, you do not need a Nigeria visa. You are a Nigerian citizen, and citizens do not apply for visas to their own country. What you need instead is a valid Nigerian passport, because Nigeria expects its citizens to enter and leave the country on one. This guide explains how that works, and what to do if your Nigerian passport has expired or you have never held one.

Honest note: RenewPapers is not the Nigeria Immigration Service, and this is general information, not legal advice on citizenship. Nationality questions can be specific to your case — the official authority is the Nigeria Immigration Service (immigration.gov.ng). What we help with is the practical part: getting or renewing the Nigerian passport you will actually travel on.

Why dual citizens travel on a passport, not a visa

Nigeria recognises dual citizenship for people who are Nigerian by birth. As a Nigerian citizen, you are not a “foreigner” in immigration terms, so the e-Visa system — which is designed for foreign nationals — is not your route. In practice:

  • You should enter and exit Nigeria on your Nigerian passport. Airlines and immigration officers expect a Nigerian citizen to present a Nigerian passport.
  • You can hold and carry both passports. Many dual citizens use their foreign passport for the rest of the journey and their Nigerian passport at the Nigerian border.
  • You do not pay for or apply for a visa to visit Nigeria as a citizen.

The catch: your Nigerian passport has to be valid

This is where most dual citizens actually get stuck. If your Nigerian passport is expired, lost, or you have only ever travelled on your foreign passport, you need to sort the passport out before you travel — not a visa. Trying to enter on your foreign passport alone can create complications precisely because Nigeria treats you as a citizen.

Children and newborns with a claim to citizenship

A child born abroad to a Nigerian parent is generally a Nigerian citizen by descent, so the child’s route is a Nigerian passport too, not a visa. See Nigerian passports for children and newborns.
