Your National Identification Number (NIN) has become the master key to daily life in Nigeria. You need it to register a SIM, open and operate a bank account, apply for a passport or driver’s licence, sit WAEC and JAMB exams, receive pension and social benefits, and access most government services. This guide covers how to register for your NIN, the documents to bring, where to enrol, and how to avoid the mistakes — and the queues — that cost people weeks.

What is the NIN, and who issues it?

The National Identification Number (NIN) is a unique 11-digit number issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). It is assigned to you for life and links your biometric and biographic details in the national identity database. Your NIN appears on your NIN slip and is available digitally through the NIMC mobile app.

Is NIN registration free?

Yes — first-time NIN enrolment is free at NIMC enrolment centres.

Insider tip: Because enrolment is free, be wary of anyone at a centre asking for cash to “speed things up” or to “register” you. The enrolment itself costs nothing. What you may legitimately pay for later are things like a NIN slip reprint or a record modification — always keep your enrolment slip and reference.

How to apply for your NIN in Nigeria

Step 1 — Pre-enrol online to save time

Before visiting a centre, complete your NIN pre-enrolment online through the NIMC portal. You enter your biographic details — name, date of birth, address, parents’ details — and receive a pre-enrolment (tracking) ID. At the centre, staff simply pull up your record instead of typing everything from scratch.

Insider tip: Fill the online form exactly as your supporting documents read — especially the order and spelling of your names and your date of birth. NIMC restricts date-of-birth changes afterwards, and name mismatches between your NIN, BVN and passport are the single biggest cause of applications being rejected later on.

Step 2 — Find an enrolment centre near you

Biometric capture — ten fingerprints and your photograph — must be done in person at an accredited NIMC enrolment centre or a licensed enrolment partner. There are centres in every state, at many LGA secretariats, and increasingly at licensed private partners and some banks.

Insider tip: Go early, mid-week. Mornings right after public holidays and at month-end are the busiest. Where you can, call ahead to confirm the centre’s capture machines are working that day — a wasted trip to a centre whose device is down is the most common frustration people report.

Step 3 — Capture your biometrics and documents

At the centre your fingerprints and facial photograph are captured and your supporting documents are checked. Review every detail on the screen before you confirm — this is your best chance to catch a typo before it becomes part of your permanent record.

Step 4 — Collect your NIN slip and go digital

Once enrolled you receive a slip bearing your 11-digit NIN. Download the NIMC mobile app to carry a digital version and to generate a virtual NIN (vNIN) for secure SIM registration and KYC.

Documents you need for NIN registration

  • Birth certificate, or a declaration of age / attestation of birth
  • Any existing government ID you hold — passport, voter’s card or driver’s licence
  • Proof of address, such as a recent utility bill
  • For a child: the parent’s or guardian’s NIN plus the child’s birth certificate
Insider tip: Bring originals and one photocopy of each. If your names appear differently across documents — a maiden name on one, a married name on another — bring the marriage certificate, a sworn affidavit, or a newspaper change-of-name to tie them together. Resolving this at enrolment is far easier than correcting your NIN later.

Lost your NIN? Retrieving and linking it

If you enrolled before but lost the number, retrieve it by dialling *346# from the phone line tied to your record, or through the NIMC app. Remember that NIN-SIM linkage is mandatory — every SIM you own must be linked to your NIN.

NIN for Nigerians abroad

Nigerians in the diaspora can enrol through NIMC-licensed enrolment centres now operating in a growing list of countries. The details and documents are broadly the same; the biometric capture is done at the overseas centre.

Skip the queue — let RenewPapers handle it

Registering once is manageable. The real pain is everything after: the return trips for corrections, the name mismatch that surfaces years later when you apply for a passport, and queuing all over again for every new document. That is exactly what we remove.

RenewPapers gives you real NIN application assistance and registration help — and it doesn’t stop at the NIN. We pre-check your details and documents so your record is right the first time, help you enrol, and keep a secure copy of everything. Once your documents are on our database, applying for your next government paper — passport, driver’s licence, CAC, tax clearance — takes a few clicks, with nothing to re-submit.

And you don’t wait in line. Where we hold a direct channel with the agency we submit on your behalf; where we don’t, we send someone to queue for you. Official channels only, genuine records — your valuable time stays yours.

Common problems & quick answers

My NIN is not working or not verified
That is almost always a data mismatch — see NIN problems and how to fix them. We find the exact field and fix it; start here.
My NIN details are wrong
We handle the correction (name/date/contact) at NIMC — note name and date-of-birth changes are limited and carry a fee.
My NIN will not link to my SIM or BVN
Your name/date must match across them. We align the records so the link goes through — link NIN to SIM.
I have forgotten or lost my NIN
We retrieve and reprint it — no need to enrol again.
