How to check and verify your NIN in 2026

Whether you want to confirm your own number, make sure your details are correct before a bank or embassy checks them, or validate that a NIN is genuine, this guide covers the legitimate ways to check and verify a National Identification Number — and how NIMC’s consent-based verification (NINAuth) now works.

Honest note: RenewPapers is not NIMC and does not run the verification database. We can help you confirm your number and make sure your record is clean, but we never ask for — and you should never share — banking passwords or PINs to “verify” a NIN. No legitimate NIN check needs those.

Checking your own NIN

  • *346# on your registered line — the quickest way to see your own NIN (small telecom charge). Works only from the phone number tied to your record.
  • NIMC’s official app / self-service — log in, confirm your identity, and view or generate a digital NIN slip.
  • Your NIN slip — the number printed on your enrolment or premium slip is your NIN; keep a photo of it.

Verifying that the details are correct

Having the number is not the same as the record being right. Before a high-stakes use — a passport, a visa, a bank KYC — check that the name, date of birth and photo on your NIN record match your other documents exactly. Mismatches are what cause rejections later, and they are far easier to fix before someone else flags them.

What are you trying to verify?

Pick your situation for the right check.

NINAuth: consent-based verification

NIMC has moved verification toward a consent model: instead of your NIN being checked behind your back, you approve each verification request, so you can see and control who accesses your identity data. The practical upshot for you: only approve requests you are expecting, and treat any unexpected “verify your NIN now” message — especially one asking for a code or a payment — as a likely scam.

Protect your NIN. Share it only with organisations that genuinely need it, avoid posting photos of your slip online, and never pay a “verification fee” to a random caller. Your NIN is an identity key — guard it like one.

If your NIN will not verify

Sometimes a NIN fails a check because of a detail mismatch, an incomplete record, or a data error from enrolment. That is fixable — usually through a data correction — and it is much better to catch it now than at a passport or visa counter.

Not sure your NIN will pass a check?

We will help you confirm your number, review your record for mismatches, and fix anything that would trip up a bank, employer or embassy — before it costs you.
