Applying for a Nigeria visa from Canada (2026)

If you are travelling to Nigeria from Canada on a Canadian passport — or any non-Nigerian passport — you need a Nigeria visa before you fly. Since 1 May 2025 Nigeria uses a fully online e-Visa, so there is no visa-on-arrival and no need to send your passport to the High Commission in Ottawa or the consulate in Toronto for a sticker. This guide covers who needs a visa, which type to pick, and how to apply from Canada without delays.

Honest note: RenewPapers is not the Nigeria Immigration Service and we do not issue visas. Applications are made on the official portal, evisa.immigration.gov.ng. We help travellers in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Vancouver and across Canada choose the right visa, prepare the documents and submit cleanly.

Do you need a Nigeria visa from Canada?

  • Canadian and other non-Nigerian passport holders — yes, a Nigeria e-Visa is required (ECOWAS passport holders travel visa-free).
  • Nigerian citizens, including dual Canadian/Nigerian citizens — no visa. You must enter and leave Nigeria on a Nigerian passport, so your route is your passport. See Nigeria visa for dual citizens and renewing a Nigerian passport in Canada.

Which Nigeria visa do you need?

  • Tourist / visit visa — holidays, sightseeing, or visiting family and friends. See Nigeria tourist visa.
  • Business visa — meetings, conferences or short assignments (not paid work); usually needs an invitation letter from the Nigerian company. See Nigeria business visa.
  • Family / visitor visa — when a relative or friend in Nigeria hosts you with an invitation and address.

Answer two quick questions and we will point you to the right visa and checklist.

How to apply for a Nigeria e-Visa from Canada

  • Create an account on the official portal, evisa.immigration.gov.ng.
  • Choose your visa type and complete the form.
  • Upload your documents (passport bio page, photo, invitation/hosting details).
  • Pay the official fee online.
  • Your approval and QR-code visa are emailed to you, usually within about 48 hours.
  • Before travel, complete the online landing card at lecard.immigration.gov.ng; you complete an exit card when you leave Nigeria.
Plan ahead. Apply a couple of weeks before travel, match the name and passport number on the form to your passport exactly, and keep at least six months’ validity on your passport. That prevents most queries.

Cost, timing and avoiding rejection

Fees are set by the Nigeria Immigration Service and vary by visa type and nationality, so confirm the current amount on the official portal rather than a third-party quote. Approvals usually come within about 48 hours. Most delays are avoidable — blurry scans, a photo that fails spec, an invitation letter missing dates or an address, or a passport near expiry.

One caution: since September 2025 Nigeria charges overstay penalties (a daily fee, with longer overstays risking entry bans), so your visa dates and travel plans must line up. We will not quote official fees we cannot guarantee — we make the application itself right.
