Applying for a Nigeria visa from the USA (2026)
Travelling to Nigeria from the United States on a US passport — or any non-Nigerian passport — means you need a Nigeria visa arranged before departure. As of 1 May 2025, Nigeria has moved to a fully online e-Visa: visa-on-arrival is gone, and you no longer mail your passport to a consulate in Washington, New York or Atlanta for a sticker. Here is how the process works from the US, which visa fits your trip, and how to get approved without delays.
Do you need a Nigeria visa from the US?
What matters is the passport in your hand, not your green card or where you live:
- US and other non-Nigerian passport holders — yes, you need a Nigeria e-Visa (ECOWAS passport holders are the exception and travel visa-free).
- Nigerian citizens, including dual US/Nigerian citizens — no visa. Nigeria requires its citizens to enter and exit on a Nigerian passport, so your route is your passport, not a visa. See Nigeria visa for dual citizens and renewing a Nigerian passport in the USA.
Which Nigeria visa should you apply for?
The e-Visa spans 13 short-visit categories. The three that cover most trips from the US are:
- Tourist / visit visa — holidays, sightseeing, or seeing family and friends. More in our Nigeria tourist visa guide.
- Business visa — conferences, meetings, deals or short assignments (not salaried work). An invitation letter from the Nigerian host company is usually required. See Nigeria business visa.
- Family / visitor visa — when a relative or friend in Nigeria hosts you and provides an invitation and address.
Use the checker to confirm your route.

How to apply for a Nigeria e-Visa from the US
It’s done entirely online — no consulate appointment, no mailing your passport:
- Register on the official portal, evisa.immigration.gov.ng.
- Select your visa type and complete the form.
- Upload documents (passport bio page, photo, invitation/hosting details).
- Pay the official fee online.
- Your approval and QR-code visa arrive by email, usually within about 48 hours.
- Before you fly, fill out the online landing card at lecard.immigration.gov.ng; an exit card is completed when you depart Nigeria.
Cost, timing and the mistakes that cause rejections
Visa fees are set by the Nigeria Immigration Service and differ by visa type and nationality (US applicants may also see reciprocity-based amounts), so confirm the current figure on the official portal rather than trusting a third-party quote. Approvals are typically within about 48 hours. What delays people is avoidable every time: low-quality scans, a non-compliant photo, an invitation letter missing dates or an address, or a passport near expiry.
