Marriage certificate requirements in Nigeria: documents & process (2026)

A registry (statutory) marriage in Nigeria is straightforward when you arrive with the right documents — and frustrating when you do not, because the registry will simply send you back. This guide lists what you need, how the notice-and-waiting process works, who has to be there, and how to avoid the delays that push weddings back.

Honest note: RenewPapers is not a marriage registry. Requirements and fees are set by the registry and can vary by Local Government. We confirm the current list for your registry, prepare your documents, and book the appointment so your marriage is not delayed.

What you typically need

  • Birth certificates or declarations of age for both parties (proof of age — both must be of marriageable age).
  • Valid photo ID for both (passport, NIN slip, driver’s licence).
  • Passport photographs (recent).
  • Proof of address / letter of identification where required.
  • Evidence of single status — a sworn affidavit of bachelorhood/spinsterhood; and for anyone previously married, a decree absolute (divorce) or a death certificate of the former spouse.
  • Two witnesses on the wedding day.
  • Parental consent where either party is under 21.

The notice-and-waiting process

  • Give notice of the intended marriage at the registry.
  • Notice is displayed for a statutory period (commonly around 21 days) so objections can be raised.
  • Pay the official fees and set the date.
  • Marry before the registrar and two witnesses — and collect the certificate.
Plan the dates. Because of the notice period, you cannot walk in and marry the same week. If you have a visa deadline or travel booked, start early — we can build the timeline around your date.
On fees: official registry fees vary by Local Government and are set by them. We do not publish a fixed figure we cannot stand behind — we confirm the current amount for your registry and quote our handling fee separately.
