Marriage registry offices in Nigeria: where to go & how to book (2026)

Where you register your marriage decides how smooth it is — and, as courts have made clear, whether the certificate is unquestionably valid. This guide explains which registries to use in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Kano and elsewhere, how to find the right one near you, and how to book without wasting a trip.

Honest note: RenewPapers is not a marriage registry. We help you identify the correct registry for a valid statutory certificate, book your notice and ceremony, and prepare your documents. Registry fees are official and set locally; our fee is for the assistance.

Which registry is the right one?

Under the Marriage Act, statutory marriages are properly conducted and registered by Local Government marriage registries and licensed places of worship. The standing of the “Federal Marriage Registry” at Ikoyi has been litigated, so for a certificate that will not be questioned later — especially for immigration abroad — using a recognised Local Government registry is the safe route. We confirm the right one for where you are.

Find the right registry near you

Tell us your city and we will point you to a suitable registry and what to prepare.

By city

  • Lagos — Local Government marriage registries across the state (Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Lagos Island and others), plus licensed churches.
  • Abuja (FCT) — Area Council marriage registries and licensed places of worship.
  • Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Kano and other capitals — Local Government registries in each LGA.
  • Smaller towns — your Local Government marriage registry is the starting point.
“Registry near me” done right. The nearest registry is not always the best choice — validity and turnaround matter more than distance. We help you pick one whose certificates are accepted without question and that can fit your date.

Booking & notice

You start by giving notice of marriage; it is displayed for the statutory period before the ceremony. Build this into your timeline — especially if a visa or travel date depends on the certificate. We handle the notice, documents and appointment so the only thing you plan is the day itself.
