Marriage certificate in Nigeria: how to register and get yours (2026)
A marriage certificate is the proof you will be asked for when you apply for a spouse visa, change a name on a passport or bank account, sponsor a partner abroad, or claim a benefit as a couple. But “marriage certificate” in Nigeria means different things depending on how you married — and getting the right one from the right authority is what determines whether an embassy or bank will accept it. This guide explains the types, who issues them, what it costs in time, and the one legal point most people get wrong.
The three kinds of marriage in Nigeria
- Statutory marriage (under the Marriage Act) — the “registry” or “court” marriage. It produces the marriage certificate that foreign embassies, immigration authorities and banks expect. It is monogamous.
- Customary marriage — conducted under the customs of the couple’s community; registered at the Local Government where it took place, which issues a certificate of customary marriage.
- Islamic marriage — conducted under Islamic law; also registrable at the Local Government for a certificate.
When people say they need a “marriage certificate” for a visa, they almost always mean the statutory one.
Which marriage certificate do you need?
Answer two questions and we will point you to the right route.
How to get a statutory marriage certificate
- Give notice of marriage at the marriage registry (a waiting period applies).
- Submit documents — see the full requirements & documents.
- Marry at the registry (or a licensed place of worship) before witnesses.
- Collect the certificate — and, if it is going abroad, have it legalised.
