Correct, replace or reprint a Nigerian marriage certificate (2026)
A misspelt name, a lost certificate before a visa interview, or a registry that cannot confirm your marriage is on record — each of these can stall a spouse visa, a name change or a bank update. This guide covers how to correct details on a marriage certificate, replace a lost one, get a certified true copy, and check that your marriage is properly registered.
Correcting a name or detail
If a name, date or other detail on the certificate is wrong, the correction is made at the issuing registry, usually supported by a sworn affidavit and identity documents showing the correct detail. A certificate that disagrees with your passport or NIN will be queried by embassies — so fix it, and keep every document consistent.

Replacing a lost certificate
A registered marriage stays on the registry record, so a lost certificate is replaced, not redone. We retrieve the entry and obtain a certified replacement copy. The trap is discovering the marriage was never actually registered — common with some church weddings — in which case we help regularise it.
Using it abroad
For a spouse visa or overseas name change, the certificate usually needs to be legalised (Nigeria is not an Apostille country, so it is authenticated by the MFA and the destination embassy, not apostilled). We arrange that in the right order.
Marriage certificate wrong, lost or unverified?
Tell us the problem. We will correct the detail, replace what is lost, confirm your marriage is registered, and legalise the certificate for use abroad.
