Nigerian birth certificate from the USA (2026)

If you are in New York, Houston, Atlanta or anywhere in the United States and a Nigerian birth certificate has been asked for — for a US green card or citizenship application, a school or college record, an SSA or state matter, or a Nigerian passport — you can obtain it without flying home. Nigeria’s birth records are held by the National Population Commission (NPC), and registration or an attestation can be arranged for Nigerians in New York, Houston, Atlanta, Washington and across the US, then legalised for local use. Here is who needs what, how it works, and how to avoid the delays.

Honest note: RenewPapers is not the NPC or any embassy. The certificate comes from the NPC. What we do for Nigerians in the USA is confirm the right document, prepare the evidence, handle the NPC submission, and arrange legalisation so a local institution accepts it first time.

Certificate, attestation or certified copy?

  • Birth certificate — if the birth was registered with the NPC.
  • Attestation of birth — if it was never registered (common for adults); widely accepted in place of a certificate.
  • Certified true copy — often what a local authority specifically asks for.

Why it matters in the USA

For US immigration (USCIS green-card and naturalisation cases), the National Visa Center and USCIS expect a civil birth record; where a birth was never registered, they recognise that a secondary/attestation route is used, with a sworn declaration of age. We prepare exactly that evidence set so it is not queried.

  • US immigration (USCIS / NVC): they follow the Department of State reciprocity schedule for Nigeria, which recognises that older births may be unregistered and need an attestation plus affidavit — we build that correctly.
  • State & federal ID matters: a certified copy is usually what is required.

Find your route from the USA

Two quick questions and we will tell you what to prepare.

On legalisation: For US use, a Nigerian birth certificate is authenticated and legalised (Nigeria is not in the Apostille Convention), typically through Nigeria’s MFA and then the relevant channel — not apostilled.
Match the names. The commonest reason a certificate is rejected abroad is a name or date that does not match the passport or visa form. Fix the spelling and date once, and keep every document consistent.

In the USA and need a Nigerian birth certificate?

Tell us what it is for. We confirm the right document, prepare it with the NPC, courier it to you and handle legalisation — so your visa, residence or school application is not held up.
