Nigerian birth certificate from Europe (2026)

If you are in Dublin, Berlin, Paris, Italy or elsewhere in Europe and a Nigerian birth certificate has been requested — for a residence permit, family reunification, naturalisation, a school place or a Nigerian passport — you can get it from Europe. Nigeria’s birth records are held by the National Population Commission (NPC), and registration or an attestation can be arranged for Nigerians in Dublin, Berlin, Paris, Rome, Milan and across Europe, then legalised for local use. Here is who needs what, how it works, and how to avoid the delays.

Honest note: RenewPapers is not the NPC or any embassy. The certificate comes from the NPC. What we do for Nigerians in Europe is confirm the right document, prepare the evidence, handle the NPC submission, and arrange legalisation so a local institution accepts it first time.

Certificate, attestation or certified copy?

  • Birth certificate — if the birth was registered with the NPC.
  • Attestation of birth — if it was never registered (common for adults); widely accepted in place of a certificate.
  • Certified true copy — often what a local authority specifically asks for.

Why it matters in Europe

European authorities (for residence, family reunification and naturalisation) are strict on document authentication. Because Nigeria is not in the Apostille Convention, these documents are legalised through Nigeria’s MFA and the destination country’s embassy — a step many applicants miss and get rejected for. We handle it end to end.

  • Ireland (INIS), Germany, France, Italy: family reunification and residence files need a properly legalised certificate; some countries also require a certified translation.
  • Naturalisation: a certified, legalised birth record is standard.

Find your route from Europe

Two quick questions and we will tell you what to prepare.

On legalisation: Across the EU/EEA and Ireland, a Nigerian certificate is legalised (MFA + embassy), not apostilled. Several countries also need a sworn translation — we can arrange both.
Match the names. The commonest reason a certificate is rejected abroad is a name or date that does not match the passport or visa form. Fix the spelling and date once, and keep every document consistent.

In Europe and need a Nigerian birth certificate?

Tell us what it is for. We confirm the right document, prepare it with the NPC, courier it to you and handle legalisation — so your visa, residence or school application is not held up.
