Registering a death and obtaining the certificate

When someone passes away, a death certificate is the document the family needs to settle almost everything — the estate, bank accounts, pension and benefits, probate, and property. In Nigeria a death is registered through the National Population Commission (NPC), and the certificate issued from that registration. This guide explains the process gently and practically, and how to replace a certificate that has been lost.

Honest note: RenewPapers is not the NPC. Death registration and certificates are issued by the Commission. What we do is handle the registration and certificate on the family’s behalf — with care, and without adding bureaucracy to a difficult time.

What it is needed for

  • Estate & probate — letters of administration and probate require the death certificate.
  • Banks & pension — releasing accounts, pensions and benefits.
  • Property & insurance — transferring assets and making claims.

How can we help?

For use abroad? If the certificate is needed overseas (an estate abroad, an insurer abroad), it will usually need legalisation — authentication through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the relevant embassy. Nigeria is not an Apostille country, so there is no “apostille”. We arrange the legalisation.

Need a death certificate handled?

Tell us what you need and we will take care of the registration or certificate with the NPC — carefully, and with as little burden on the family as possible.
