Nigerian birth certificate from the UK (2026)

If you are in London, Manchester, Birmingham or anywhere in the UK and need a Nigerian birth certificate — for a British passport application, a visa, a school place, a settlement or citizenship application, or to prove identity — you can get one without travelling to Nigeria. Nigeria’s birth records are held by the National Population Commission (NPC), and the registration or attestation can be arranged from the UK, then legalised for UK use. This guide covers who needs what, how it works, and how to avoid the delays that hold applications up.

Honest note: RenewPapers is not the NPC, the Nigeria High Commission or the UK Home Office. The certificate itself comes from the NPC. What we do for UK-based Nigerians is confirm the right document, prepare the evidence, handle the NPC submission, and arrange legalisation so a UK institution accepts it — without the back-and-forth.

Do you need a certificate, or an attestation?

  • Birth certificate — if the birth was registered with the NPC, you need the certificate (or a certified copy).
  • Attestation of birth — if the birth was never registered (common for adults), the NPC issues an attestation instead, which UK bodies generally accept.
  • Certified true copy — many UK processes specifically ask for a certified copy rather than the original.

How it works from the UK

  • We confirm whether you need a certificate, attestation or certified copy.
  • We prepare the supporting evidence (parent details, any existing records, a declaration of age where needed).
  • The application goes through the NPC’s official channel; you pay the official fee.
  • The document is collected and couriered, and — if a UK body requires it — legalised for UK use.
For a British passport for your child, HM Passport Office wants documents that prove the parental/Nigerian link consistently. Get the names and dates aligned across the Nigerian certificate and the parent’s documents before you submit.
On legalisation: Nigeria is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, so a Nigerian birth certificate for UK use is authenticated and legalised, not apostilled. Anyone offering a Nigerian “apostille” is misdescribing the process.

In the UK and need a Nigerian birth certificate?

Tell us what it is for. We confirm the right document, prepare it with the NPC, courier it to you in the UK and handle legalisation — so your passport, visa or school application is not held up.
