How to correct or update your NIN details in 2026

A wrong name, a mistyped date of birth, an old phone number or a changed address on your NIN record can block a bank account, a passport application or a SIM — so it is worth fixing properly. NIMC calls this data modification, and the rules differ depending on which field you want to change. This guide explains what you can update, what it costs, how many times you are allowed to change certain fields, and the documents you will need.

Honest note: RenewPapers is not NIMC and we cannot alter the database ourselves. Modifications are made through NIMC and some carry an official government fee that we do not set. We help you prepare the right evidence and submit correctly so your change is accepted the first time — and we always separate NIMC’s official fee from our handling charge.

What you can change — and the catches

  • Phone number and email — among the easier updates; useful to keep current so *346# retrieval keeps working.
  • Address — updatable with supporting proof.
  • Name — correctable (spelling, marriage, re-ordering), usually with documentary evidence such as a sworn affidavit, marriage certificate or newspaper publication depending on the change.
  • Date of birth — the most tightly controlled field. NIMC generally allows a date-of-birth change only a very limited number of times and charges a notable official fee for it; strong documentary proof (such as a birth certificate or declaration of age) is required.
Change limits matter. Some fields — date of birth especially — can only be modified a restricted number of times in your lifetime. Get it right rather than using up an allowance on a rushed, poorly evidenced attempt.

What do you need to correct?

Pick the field and we will tell you what evidence and cost to expect.

What it costs

Simple updates like phone or email are inexpensive or free through official channels; address and name changes carry modest official fees; a date-of-birth change carries the largest official NIMC fee and the tightest limits. Because these government amounts are reviewed periodically, we do not publish a fixed figure we cannot stand behind — we confirm the current official fee with you and quote our handling charge separately.

Watch out for: anyone who offers to change your date of birth “off the record” or without evidence. A modification that is not properly documented can be reversed or flagged, and it can cost you an irreplaceable change allowance.

How we help

We tell you which evidence NIMC accepts for your specific change, help you get documents like affidavits in order, and guide the submission so it is approved the first time — sparing you a wasted modification allowance or a rejected application.
