A Nigeria visa is what a foreign national needs to enter the country — and in 2026 the way you get one looks very different from a few years ago. The old lines at the embassy have largely moved online, Visa on Arrival still exists but is narrower than most people think, and the rules depend heavily on which passport you hold. This guide maps the whole system so you can find the one route that applies to you.

The main types of Nigeria visa
- e-Visa / Tourist visa — for visiting, tourism, or seeing family. Applied for online before you travel in most cases.
- Business visa — for meetings, conferences, negotiations and short commercial visits. It does not by itself grant the right to work for a Nigerian employer.
- Visa on Arrival (VoA) — pre-approval obtained online, with the visa issued at the airport. Open to specific travellers, mainly business visitors from countries without easy access to a Nigerian mission.
- Transit visa — for passing through Nigeria to a third country when you leave the airport.
- ECOWAS free movement — citizens of ECOWAS member states do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days.

How the e-Visa process works
For most non-ECOWAS visitors, the journey now starts online rather than at an embassy:
- Create an application on the official Nigeria immigration e-Visa portal and choose your visa class.
- Upload your documents — passport bio page, a recent photo, and whatever your category needs (a host letter, hotel booking, or company invitation).
- Pay the visa fee online and submit.
- Receive your approval by email, then present it on arrival where biometrics are captured.
Visa on Arrival is not a walk-up
Despite the name, Visa on Arrival is not something you request at the desk after landing. You apply for pre-approval online first, receive an approval letter, and only then is the visa issued at the airport. It is designed mainly for business travellers from countries with limited access to a Nigerian mission. Turning up without pre-approval is the fastest way to be turned back.
Common questions
Can I extend my visa inside Nigeria? Short-stay visas can sometimes be extended through the immigration service, but it is far easier to apply for the right duration up front.
Does a business visa let me work? No. It covers meetings and commercial visits. Paid employment requires a work permit and the appropriate residence documents.
