Your TIN: the key to tax in Nigeria

The Tax Identification Number (TIN) is the single reference the tax authority uses for everything — filing, payments, tax clearance, bank and forex compliance. Since the 2025 tax reforms, tax administration has moved to the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) (the renamed FIRS), with a more digital, more joined-up approach. This guide explains how to get a TIN, how it links to your NIN or CAC record, and how to verify one — for individuals and companies.

Honest note: RenewPapers is not the NRS. TINs are issued by the tax authority. What we do is register, retrieve and verify your TIN and get the linkages (NIN, CAC) right so your tax record is clean from the start.
NRS, not FIRS. Under the 2025 Nigeria Tax Act, the Federal Inland Revenue Service became the Nigeria Revenue Service. Old “FIRS” references still float around — the body and the portals are transitioning, so we make sure you are dealing with the current system.

Individuals vs companies

  • Individuals — a personal TIN is increasingly tied to your NIN. Many people effectively already have one; it just needs activating/retrieving.
  • Companies & business names — a TIN is generated alongside CAC registration and is required before you can open a corporate account, file, or get a tax clearance certificate.
