Lost something important? Start with the police report
When an official document is lost or stolen — a passport, a certificate, an ID — the replacement process almost always starts with a police report (police extract). Embassies, the Immigration Service and issuing agencies ask for it as proof before they will replace the document. This guide explains how to get one and use it.
When you need one
- Lost or stolen passport — required before replacement (and for an Emergency Travel Certificate abroad).
- Lost certificate or ID — birth/marriage certificate, NIN slip, academic certificate, and more.
- Insurance / official claims — where proof of loss is needed.
