How to link your NIN to your SIM (MTN, Airtel, Glo & 9mobile)
Nigeria requires every SIM to be linked to a valid National Identification Number. If your line is restricted, cannot make calls, or you have just bought a new SIM, linking your NIN is what fixes it. The good news: linking is free, and you can do it yourself in a few minutes. This guide shows the methods for each network, what to do about a blocked SIM, and how to link lines for family members.
Before you link: you need your NIN
You cannot link a SIM without a NIN. If you do not have one yet, start with NIN registration; if you have one but cannot remember it, retrieve it first. Make sure the name on your NIN and your SIM registration match — mismatches are the usual reason a link is rejected.

Why a SIM gets blocked — and how to unblock it
- No NIN linked — link it using the method above and the restriction should lift.
- Name mismatch — if your SIM was registered as “John A” but your NIN says “John Adewale”, the systems will not match. This is the most common blocker and usually needs a correction on one side.
- NIN not verified — occasionally the number is entered wrong; double-check each digit.
If a mismatch is the problem, you may need to correct your NIN details or update your SIM registration so the two agree.
Linking lines for family members
You can link SIMs for children, elderly parents or other dependants using their own NINs. Each line must be linked to the NIN of the person it belongs to — not all piled onto one person’s number — so make sure each family member has their own NIN first.
