From deed to perfected title
When you buy land you get a deed of assignment (or deed of conveyance) — the document transferring it to you. But a signed deed alone does not fully protect you: your title is only perfected once it has Governor’s Consent, is stamped, and is registered. Until then your ownership is incomplete and hard to defend or resell. This guide explains the deed and the three steps of perfection.
The three steps of perfection
- Governor’s Consent — required for a valid transfer of land that already has a C of O.
- Stamping — the deed is stamped (duty paid) at the relevant revenue authority.
- Registration — the deed is registered at the land registry so your ownership is on the public record.
